ON TUESDAY, COMMUNITY MEMBERS GATHERED AT NAT TURNER PARK IN NEWARK TO CELEBRATE THE 181ST ANNIVERSARY OF THE 1831 VIRGINIA SLAVE REBELLION, WHICH SOME SAY WAS THE FIRST SALVO OF THE WAR TO ABOLISH SLAVERY IN THE UNITED STATES. THIS WAS THE THIRD ANNUAL CELEBRATION THE PEOPLEâS ORGANIZATION FOR PROGRESS HELD IN THE ONLY PARK IN THE COUNTRY KNOWN TO BE NAMED AFTER THE REVOLUTIONARY HERO.
