Jim Pictou is a member of the Miâkmaq Warrior Society, âthe homeland security of the Miâkmaq nation.â Today, the Miâkmaq, whose ancestral lands span much of the Atlantic region of Canada, are at the center of a developing resistance to hydraulic fracturing â or âfrackingâ in New Brunswick, the process by which high-pressure water and chemicals are injected into the ground to remove natural gas from shale rock. The resistance to fracking in New Brunswick has seen the development of a broad united front of native and non-native people.
