JANE JACOBS
"OUR OWN DARK AGE AHEAD"
When Jane Jacobs came to Hamilton to speak about why she wrote "Dark Age Ahead", she was aware of some of the urban problems Hamilton has been having. It was like she was speaking to those that have been fighting against harmful development, and her words managed to inspire an audience of over 500 in attendance.
Jane Jacobs is to be treasured. Not just because the books she has written force us to pull back and take a good look at what we are doing to ourselves as a society, but also because at the age of 88, she still manages to write books and do book tours, speaking as brightly as the spark in her blue eyes.
You get the idea that this is a true rabble rouser; an activist that is not afraid to speak out and point fingers at what she sees going wrong around us.
Her recent appearance in Hamilton to promote her newest book "Dark Age ahead", filled the Mohawk auditorium to capacity with those eager to find answers to what they perceive as the urban decay around them. Oddly there was no other press there other than myself and no city leaders.
