Labour Purges Bristol Universitys Spinwatch editor, Prof. David Miller and other Israel lobby critics - The UK Labour Party has launched a new purge of the left and the Palestine solidarity movement still remaining in its ranks. A noted academic expert on the Israel lobby and two leading members of a Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) branch were among those whose party membership was suspended on Monday. Professor David Miller of Bristol University, as well as Becky Massey and Pam Page of Brighton PSC all received letters from the party within hours of each other, they told The Electronic Intifada. Along with the summary expulsion of another local member in October, the suspensions seem to add up to an attack on Brighton PSC – one of the UK’s most active branches of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign. The new purge commenced only hours after Labour’s new right-wing leader Keir Starmer held a virtual meeting with the leadership of the Jewish Labour Movement, a pro-Israel lobby within the party. A sociologist, Miller is an expert on the propaganda operations of state and corporate lobbies. He has documented the methods and history of the pro-Israel lobby for years. “This latest round of suspensions continues the targeted harassment of socialist members,” Miller told The Electronic Intifada. A book Miller co-wrote about Labourwas censored during the party’s conference last year, after Israel lobby pressure. Under the guise of Labour’s “anti-Semitism crisis,” the party bureaucracy has accelerated this trend in recent months under the new right-wing leadership. But it is merely a continuation of asimilar policy under Jennie Formby, theoutgoing pro-Corbyn general secretary, Miller said. He argued that the suspensions were designed to target members who understand the racism of Zionism, “which is very obviously incompatible with membership of the Labour Party.”..

Number of benefit claims soars by 69% as it rises by 856,500 to 2.1MILLION after lockdown - despite furlough scheme that kept millions in work.  Unemployment figures show a rise of 50,000 people in three months to March - Estimates for April show number of paid employees fell 1.6 per cent from March - New report by the Resolution Foundation finds younger people facing pay cuts = The report also warns older workers face risk of being made involuntary retired - The number of people claiming benefits has soared by a record 856,500 to 2.1million in the first full month of the coronavirus lockdown - despite the furlough scheme keeping millions in work. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said that claims under Universal Credit sky-rocketed by 69 per cent in April, as the country begins easing out of the draconian lockdown measures imposed in late-March. Todays newly released figures also revealed that unemployment jumped by 50,000 to 1.35 million in the three months to March. The dire numbers come despite Chancellor Rishi Sunaks job retention scheme that currently has 7.5 million people on furlough in efforts to prop up the economy during the pandemic. Without the scheme, designed to help employers keep staff during the crisis, the benefits claims would likely be significantly higher. Thousands of people have started making their way back to work this week after the Prime Minister eased lockdown restrictions last Sunday. Mr Johnson emphasised last week he wants to kickstart the economy and get back to work, after dire forecasts last week that saw the economy shrink by 2 per cent. It also announced that early estimates for April 2020 indicate that the number of paid employees fell by 1.6 per compared to March, as firms began to feel a greater impact from the lockdown...

Brexit warning: EUs nonsense demands may force UK to seek extension at crunch point - THE EUROPEAN UNIONs "unprecedented" arguments in Brexit negotiations are increasing the likelihood of an extension. THE EUROPEAN UNIONs "unprecedented" arguments in Brexit negotiations are increasing the likelihood of an extension being a "sensible" option, the former governor of the Bank of England has warned. Brexit talks are on the verge of collapse after rows have broken out over each partys red lines between UK Chief Negotiator David Frost and his EU counterpart Michel Barnier. The UK has six weeks until a legally binding deadline ruling out an extension to the transition period. Lord Mervyn King, the former governor of the Bank of England, suggested to LBC that an extension may be more likely as the coronavirus crisis goes on. He said the EUs arguments dont "make a great deal of sense". He said: "So far it seems that there is an understandable disagreement between the UK and the European Union. "The UK voted to leave the EU and one of the reasons was so the UK could then decide its own regulations that would apply to our economy. "The European Union is arguing that even though we will leave the EU, we should still follow their rules and regulations in order to have a free trade agreement. "That is unprecedented, there is no real parallel for that."...
