Biomass magazine – Drax pay 25 million Euros to OfGem to not investigate – Power station operator, Drax, has agreed to pay £25 million after an energy watchdog found it submitted inaccurate data. Ofgem found it failed to report data adequately after an investigation into the company’s profiling data, which is characterising where the biomass comes from. A former coal-fired power station, Drax is now the UK’s largest biomass generator. Biomass involves burning wood or plants to create heat, transport fuel or electricity, and Biomass generators have become a key part of the government’s drive to meet climate targets. The power plant in, Selby, North Yorkshire receives hefty Government subsidies from burning biomass wood chips. Ofgem said it lacked the necessary data governance and controls in place, meaning it did not give the regulator accurate and robust data on the type of wood it uses.

The EU’s General Court said it was throwing out the 2019 penalty imposed by the European Commission, which is the 27-nation bloc’s top antitrust enforcer. “The General Court annuls the Commission’s decision in its entirety,” the court said in a press release. The commission’s ruling applied to a narrow portion of Google’s ad business: ads that the Alphabet-owned US tech giant sold next to Google search results on third-party websites. Regulators had accused Google of inserting exclusivity clauses in its contracts that barred these websites from running similarly placed ads sold by Google’s rivals. The commission said when it issued the penalty that Google’s behavior resulted in advertisers and website owners having less choice and likely facing higher prices that would be passed on to consumers. But the General Court said the commission “committed errors” when it assessed those clauses. The commission failed to demonstrate that Google’s contracts deterred innovation, harmed consumers or helped the company hold on to and strengthen its dominant position in national online search advertising markets, it said.

The document, which will be similar to the report published last week by Lord Darzi on how to fix the NHS, will warn Sir Keir Starmer that “doing nothing is not an option” for universities as they face a major crisis. The group will demand tuition fees be raised in line with inflation from the 2025-26 academic year as a “necessary” step, The Telegraph has been told. Tuition fees in England have remained frozen at £9,250 since 2017, when they received a minor uplift of £250 – their first increase since 2012. Universities have warned it means they are now losing thousands of pounds for each home student they enrol. Vivienne Stern, the chief executive of UUK, told The Telegraph that the Government must step in to “stabilise the ship”, as more than 40 per cent of institutions in England are expected to sink into a deficit this year. “Just get on and index-link the fee – this cannot be allowed to continue. The nonbinding resolution put forward by the Palestinian Authority was based on the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) back in July, which said Israel’s presence in the occupied territories was unlawful and must end. One hundred and twenty-four countries voted in favour of the resolution at UN headquarters in New York City, while 14 countries voted against it, including Israel and the United States. The 43 countries that abstained include US allies Australia, Canada, Germany, and Ukraine. Their ambassadors said that while they support a two-state solution, they cannot vote in favour of a resolution that does not spell out Israel’s right to defend itself.

Climate change doesn’t even make it into the top ten of threats to Britain. Here, in my considered opinion, are 10 that I think are more important. Starting with a Biblical theme, I give you the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (New Testament, Book of Revelation): I could go on, but you get the picture. Now, I’m not saying that climate change, or climate variation as I prefer to call it, does not contribute to some of these other threats in one way or another, but as a stand alone issue? I don’t think so. A quick straw poll amongst my serving and ex-military colleagues suggests that Lammy is okay when reading from a script but not so okay when forced to think for himself. Here is a selection of (by necessity anonymised) quotes: “Lammy seems out of his depth in his analysis and is putting out soundbites not substance as usual”. “We have bigger issues to worry about other than making us dependent on other countries’ fossil fuels because we have closed all of ours down”. “Lammy is good at reading what is out in front of him without knowing what he is talking about”. “Is Russia worried about net zero? Are Hamas and those other terrorist organisations that seek to harm us?” “Beyond asking whether Lammy himself is the existential threat facing the country I’m not sure I can be polite.”

It raises questions about the degree to which parts of the British media are – inadvertently or otherwise – colluding in Israeli disinformation. The 180-year-old Jewish Chronicle, or JC as it is now known, lost four of its big-name columnists on Sunday, after it was revealed that the paper had published a story based on a forged document concerning Israel’s war on Gaza. Jonathan Freedland, David Aaronovitch, Hadley Freeman and David Baddiel swiftly quit the paper. The Chronicle, it emerged, had apparently failed to make the most rudimentary checks on Elon Perry, a mysterious British-based Israeli freelance journalist who has written nine stories for the paper since Israel’s war on Gaza began nearly a year ago. All have now been excised from its website.

For those who are not aware, US outlets like Time Magazine & Newsweek have been traditionally used by CIA for propaganda and limited hangouts for international audiences – especially for active US-UK covert action theatres like Syria & Ukraine. The Ryan Routh story is yet another prime example of this. Based on this, then it’s not a stretch to conclude that he is most likely an asset or useful idiot who was on the books to be deployed for specific roles, this latest incident in Florida being his swan song…
