Justice, Poverty and Oil: Unresolved Issues in East Timor

Sources of income, employment and sustainability are urgent issues for Timor-Leste. For the next two generations Timor-Lesteâ¢s government will receive more than 95% of its revenues from oil and gas exports, which will then drop to zero. Developing the economy and alleviating poverty while avoiding the resource curse and other pitfalls of globalization are critical to the countryâ¢s future.
The ongoing struggle for justice is also an important issue. At the end of January, General Suharto-- the vicious Indonesian dictator responsible for killing more than 100,000 East Timorese people (as well as hundreds of thousands more Papuans, Acehnese and Indonesians) died, escaping justice. Many Timorese and Indonesians are still working to end impunity. For all the trauma Indonesia inflicted on Timor-Lesteâ¢s people, not one senior official has been brought to a trial for his crimes during Indonesiaâ¢s 24-year illegal occupation.
Justice, Poverty and Oil: Unresolved Issues in East Timor will serve to give updates and context to recent events and developments in Timor-Leste. John M. Miller, National Coordinator of the East Timor and Indonesia Action Network (ETAN), will discuss the relationship between justice and the current crises. Charlie Scheiner, who is just returning from Timor-Leste where he works for Laâ¢o Hamutuk (Timor-Leste Institute for Development Monitoring and Analysis), will discuss recent events and provide information on oil-related issues.
