Dr. Joseph Bowman has worked for the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for more than two decades. He is a physical chemist by training. His research at NIOSH has focused on the health effects of electromagnetic fields and radio frequency (RF) radiation.

This interview provides a clearly set forth introduction into the subjects of RF radiation exposure and health effects. The cancer endpoint is most fully addressed.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer recently classified RF radiation as a possible human carcinogen. According to Dr. Bowman, cell phone use in which the cell phone is placed against the head is a much larger contributor to the possible cancer risk of RF radiation exposure than exposure to sources such as cell phone towers and wireless internet. This is due to the proximity of the emitting device to the head and the quantity of energy emitted by the source.

There is much to be learned about how RF radiation exposure causes cancer. Currently no one knows how the RF radiation from cell phones could contribute to cancer causation. However, a statistical study by Dr. Bowman and others reported that RF radiation exposure measured as energy absorbed at the tumor site is associated with increased brain cancer risk.

Thus, the longer the total period of time that has elapsed during which one has held a cell phone against ones head, the larger the cancer risk which might possibly be imposed. Since our brains absorb far less RF energy from laptop computers and other wireless sources commonly found in homes and offices, these other RF devices add little to the possible cancer risk resultant from cell phone use.

People concerned about the possible cancer risk associated with cell phone use should take steps to reduce the amount of RF radiation that they receive from cell phones.
